Mexican orphanages' informality

Septiembre 17, 2021

It is difficult to talk about the delicate and urgent situation of orphanages in Mexico. It is known about some cases where children with health and emotional problems arrive at this place and, sometimes, the new home that hosts them is not in the conditions they deserve due to the lack of economic and academic resources, health services, among others.

Approximately 40 million children live in Mexico and more than half of them live in poverty, which inevitably leads these minors to experience violent treatment from their caregivers, academic difficulties, or even health problems.

Social programs and services around the country should try to focus on this part of the population, which is extremely helpless, fragile, and has not seen a clear and effective solution to these problems for a long time.

It is important to mention some illegalities related to the needs of children and young people in orphanages in the country. In some institutions, it is common to neglect some children because of having so many of them under their care.

When this happens, usually the caregivers or caretakers may overlook the fact that the children have a certain disability or illness, either due to lack of attention to the children or lack of financial support to cover treatment or therapy.

It is essential to comply with formalities or protocols during the admission of children and young people to programs, social institutions, or orphanages. Each child and teenager must be legally registered (with documents and identification, if available) as a resident of the orphanage, must be monitored from their arrival at the orphanage, during their adaptation process, and until their departure.

Finally, those in charge of the orphanage must ensure that the minor receives quality and personalized medical attention and, if necessary, provide the child with the treatment or therapy he or she needs.

The number of children transferred from one orphanage to another without prior authorization or notice is a cause for concern. This usually occurs when the home that is hosting the child can no longer keep him there, either due to lack of space or lack of financial support, but complete control of this should be taken even before admitting the child to the orphanage.

This kind of situation in a person of such a young age can be very confusing and frightening, so it is the duty of those in charge of social programs or orphanages to take full responsibility for the place where each child will live, that it meets the minimum conditions to provide a good quality of life and that, as time goes by, this orphanage or "temporary home" makes the child feel so comfortable that she can adapt to it and become her home soon.

At Fundación Esperanza Contigo, we are committed to these measures in the orphanages in which we collaborate, so each year we conduct a census that, besides counting the children, we can calculate their economic, psychological, medical, and educational needs. We invite you to join this cause through donations or volunteering.
