Tijuana is a captivating place. It is dynamic, rich in culture and has great growth potential. However, like any city, it has its share of problems. Poverty, crime and drug addiction are issues that many of its inhabitants struggle with on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, these problems have left many children and teenagers without parents or guardians to care for them. In the Mexican city, there are orphanages that house hundreds of children who have lost one or both parents.

These facilities provide homes for these youngsters to have a place to live while receiving the care they need.

If you are interested in learning more about these organizations or how you can help orphanages in Tijuana and Baja California, we invite you to continue reading this article.

How Many Children Are Orphaned in Tijuana?

Orphaned and abandoned children in Tijuana are an unfortunate reality. According to statistics, some 5,000 children in Baja California have lost one or both parents.

These children will spend their lives in and out of orphanages throughout the city. Unfortunately, the situation will not improve any time soon.

Due to the problems mentioned above of drug addiction and structural poverty in the region, the number of orphaned children is expected to increase in short to medium term.

Why Are There So Many Orphaned Children in Tijuana?

The population in the Tijuana metropolitan area exceeds two million people. In addition, the city is located just south of the border with San Diego.

As a border city, many of the people arriving in the town are Latin Americans and other fellow citizens attempting to cross the border into the United States.

This situation has led to decades of unaccompanied minors being detained at the border. Frequently, they end up in the care of adults who are not their parents.

Many cross the border illegally, sometimes leaving their children behind or vice versa. But this is just one single reason.

Another reason children in Tijuana are without parents is drug addiction. Unfortunately, throughout Mexico, there is a widespread and recognized drug problem.

Tijuana is also considered one of the most violent cities in the country. That is, other children are orphaned because they are victims of violent crime at the hands of their parents or gangs.

Many of these children end up living in orphanages because they have nowhere else to go.
